A Walk

A walk in the afternoon.
Polka dots scattered in all shapes and sizes
and colors: bright yellow, orange, rust, brown, green and gray.
damp asphalt and gravel,
recent rain marinated the stones and earth
and with the smell of early decay wafted around
reminding me of my Grandmother as it hit the back of my throat.
warm for late September,
humid, saturated, the early sunset made the shadows long, cool oases in suburbia.

The Inevitable

Helping a five and a half year old deal with the concept of death and loss fucking sucks. But in a way it is the greatest thing also because it forces the issue upon us too. The stories we tell ourselves. The fables and religious ideology that we cling to when we are forced to face these things. The waking at three o'clock in the morning, gasping for breath, sweating with the realization of the inevitability, the finality, the infinity that continues with out us. But that's what kids are for, right? Little J said to me yesterday, "Mommy, I love you infinity plus infinity!"... Oh! If you only knew!
